Unilever House, Surrey - Unilever (UK) Ltd

We were engaged by MHBC on behalf of Unilever PLC one of the UK's biggest companies to construct a brand new, steel framed podium car park to form an additional 136 car spaces.

The works were carried out at Unilever's main office in Leatherhead, the site presented a number of challenges including buried services, an energy centre in close proximity to the works, sensitive neighbours and environmental considerations.

A key feature of the works was to safely design & install the 140 piled foundations required with associated civils. The areas were carefully checked & mapped for concealed & buried services and the foundations designed by MHBC were positioned around these.

Another key feature of the works is tenant liaison & careful management of the works as the site is within a busy office complex/business park. The works consisted of CFA pile foundations with associated R.C pads and associated civils.

London Underground - Fulham - Calibration Unit – Extension Project - Phases I & II

Description of Works; To convert a disused Warehouse/Store Area to a new workshop/laboratory unit. The Calibration dept. of LUL require a climate controlled work area with constant temperatures to enable their work of Re-Calibrating Survey & Gauging Equipment.


The project involved sectioning off a section of the warehouse, erecting insulated metal studwork partitions, new insulated Suspended ceilings, new lighting and small power, new Anti-Slip flooring, new extraction system for fumes, new Air Conditioning, Creation of Structural Openings to link the existing Caliberation Unit to the newly extended area, Tiling, Decorations & 2nd Fix Joinery.

London Underground - Commercial Kitchen/Restaurant Fit Out - Acton LUL Depot,

The scope of work included strip out of existing kitchen, make safe and adapt services, removal of existing floor and wall tiling and backing, new floor screed and wall plastering, new lighting, electric and gas services, new extract canopy, anti slip floor tiling, wall tiling, roof lights to staff offices off the kitchen, joinery and supply and installation of new kitchen equipment.


The program duration was short and important to our client. H A Marks scheduled noisy works not to occur around canteen busy periods and materials were carefully specified to aid the program. For example, the floor screed drying out times would have an effect on commencing the floor tiling.

LUL - REW - Engineering Workshop Stores Warehouse

The former storage area to one side of the dispatch area had been a canopied stores.


H.A Marks completed full site investigations and designed and engineered, steel framed single storey warehouse shed.


The site was highly restricted for space and to get the maximum space, a new unit some 60m long was constructed.


The cladding was carefully colour matched, installed and flashed in to the existing REW dispatch warehouse.


Careful considerations were given to the drainage layout which had to be relaid in areas to deal with the surface water.

New Storage & Distribution - Ford, Rainham, Essex

Our client is a nationwide distributor of Gases including Nitrogen & Oxygen to Hospitals, Schools, Pubs, Breweries and Hotels.

As part of a nationwide expansion program a suitable site was secured in East London and H.A Marks were engaged to construct a new storage and transfer depot.

The works involved carrying out;

 . Major excavation works, removal of contaminated soil, soil remediation works.

 . Forming new over site, reinforced with industrial Geo mesh.

 . Reinforced Concrete Slab Areas.

 . Construction of Gas Storage Facilities, reinforced concrete bases and stillage areas.

 . New Modular Administration Offices and Welfare Facilities.

 . Driver Transfer Area.

 The works were successfully completed on time and now forms a part of a key supply chain for our client in the SouthEast.

LUL - REW Covered Wheel Area

The REW (Rail Engineering Workshop) at Acton Rail Depot invested in a new Factory extension & Storage Facility.

Constructed under LUL's stringent QUENSH Conditions, the project consisted of the construction of a new Steel Framed Extension to the existing REW Factory.

A particular feature of the project was the a complex system of piling and groundbeams designed around a high density of existing Sub-Terrianial High Voltage Cables.

We used 3d sub terrain scanning technology along with proving excavations to carefully plot and locate the cables.

We designed and constructed a Steel Framed, Steel Profiled Clad Factory extension with an Integral Gantry Crane, a Hydraulic Turntable and Railway System for the storage of new Train Wheel Sets.

The project was challenging but proved a great success and worthy additional to REW's State of the Art Engineering Facility at Acton.

The Craft Potters Gallery

The works involved the full strip out , structural Alterations, drainage, basement works, Refurbishment and Fit Out Works to the basement and Ground Floor Areas to form a new Retail, Wash Rooms and Display Areas for the Craft Potters Association.

The project was a fast track program where by a good deal of Out of Hours working was carried out to meet the program.

The job was very successful, completed on time and budget.

The GAP Site, Hastings

A key feature of the project was the Castillated Facade required to the elevations.

H.A Marks designed and installed a light weight Metal Framing System which was self supported and hung off the main structural concrete frame in vertical 'Tiered' layers to achieve the required Castillated Profile.

We also installed the curved Insulated Render System in STO.

The front feature balcony known as the 'Porte Cocher' was rendered with a Sto Insulated Render System.

We also constructed the front Canopy using leightweight Metal Framing.

We supplied and fitted the associated metal flashing systems, Trims and Brickslip Facades as required

Honiton Station

The waiting room, Ticket Hall and Administration offices at Honiton Station were partially demolished and cleared.

During the works a temporary Ticket Hall, Waiting Room and Staff Areas were provided to enable the continued operations of the station.

The main Steel Frame and Roof of the Ticket Hall was maintained whilst the rest of the areas were stripped out and demolished.
H.A Marks constructed a New Build Extension to the Station to include services, new Metsec Framing to Walls & Ceilings, new Toilet Areas and New Staff Acommodation.

We carried out a full re-fit/refurbishment to the other areas to include new Mechanical & Electrical Services. A large scale DDA Ramp was constructed to the front of the station.

The project was a great success and the works were finished on time and on budget with minimal disruption to the Stations operations.

Finchley Road Station - Canfield House

Finchley Road Station is located on the Jubilee line, Canfield House is the Residential Block of Apartments built over the Station.

As part of TFL's planned maintenance schedule the project involved;

Crittal Window Replacements Roofing Works inc. lead, slate and Sarnafil. Stone Repairs Brick Repairs Brick Cleaning & Pointing.

The works were carried out at the busy station with the scaffolding sequence erected and dismantled during Engineering hours.

The works were carried out in accordance with LUL's Quensh working conditions.

Union Street

The scope of works included the complete refurbishment of the ground floor and basement office areas, refurbishment of common areas including the reception and entrance, installation of a new staircase linking basement and reception, installation of new lift facilities, upgrade of all staircases, major structural opening up and temporary works within the basement and reception, provision for natural lighting to the basement, waterproofing of basement.

The mechanical and electrical upgrade included installation of new boilers and revamp of the entire
heating system, air conditioning and security installation. The existing building was a six storey converted warehouse located within 5 minutes f London Bridge. Aside from the normal constraints of
working within a city location our client wanted to maintain a fully operational office building during the works.
